Alvaro Macieira-Coelho

Research Director at the Frenc, France

  • Title Of Presentation : Aging Happens by Default

Dr. Alvaro Macieira-Coelho is a Research Director at the French National Institute of Health. He received an MD from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and a PhD from the University of Uppsala Sweden. He made an internship at the University Hospital in Lisbon and was a research associate at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia (USA) and at the Department of Cell Biology of the University of Uppsala (Sweden). He became Head of the Department of Cell Pathology at the Cancer Institute in Villejuif (France) and was a visiting Professor at the University of Linkoping (Sweden). He published 150 papers in professional Journals and 9 books on cancer and aging. He received the following awards: Fritz Verzar Prize (University of Vienna, Austria), “Seeds of Science” Career Prize (Lisbon, Portugal), Dr. Honoris Causa (University of Linkoping, Sweden), Johananof International Visiting Professor (Institute Mario Negri, Milano, Italy).

Patrick McGowan

Dr. Patrick McGowan joined the University of Victoria in January of 2002 and directs Self-Management BC. His background experience has been in health promotion research, administration, social planning and consulting. During the last 30 years his main focus has been on investigating the effectiveness and implementation of best practice of health education programs for persons experiencing chronic health conditions, particularly self-management programs and strategies. Dr. McGowan participates on provincial, federal and international committees.

Deana Lacy McQuitty

  • Title Of Presentation : A Preliminary Study: Communication Counseling for Caregivers of Individuals With Alzheimer’s Disease

Dr. Deana Lacy McQuitty, CCC-SLP, an ASHA licensed speech-language pathologist has over 20 years of experience in the assessment and interventions processes of communication disorders across the life span. She has presented over 80 presentations at local, regional, state and national conferences.  She has clinical experience in such settings as early intervention, secondary education, skilled nursing facilities and the medical setting. Her current research interest includes increasing communication effectiveness and raising awareness or promoting the counseling process and its relationship to communication disorders across the lifespan of culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Her research is related to pedagogy in adult language disorders.

Nancy C. Bernardy

VA National Center for PTSD , USA

  • Title Of Presentation : Taking the Message Direct to the Patient: Evidence-based PTSD Care

Nancy Bernardy is a clinical research psychologist and Associate Director of Clinical Networking at the Executive Division of the National Center for PTSD. She holds a PhD in Biological Psychology from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and completed requirements for a clinical psychology degree from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.  She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.  Her VA funded research focuses on implementation methods to improve the dissemination of guideline-recommended treatments for PTSD including facilitation and academic detailing, particularly in rural areas.

Neena L. Chappell

University of Victoria, Canada

  • Title Of Presentation : Intersectionality in the lives of caregivers to older adults

Neena L. Chappell has focused on social gerontology throughout her 30+ year career. Her interest lies in the demonstration of the value and relevance of sociological thought and research for applied issues in aging. She believes rigorous University-based social science research has a critical role to play in the non-university community.

Emphases on care giving, health and social policy in Canada and cross-nationally characterize her research. She has established two world class university research centers on aging, one at the University of Manitoba and one at the University of Victoria, where she continues to conduct research.

She has published over 300 academic articles and reports and brought in over $45 million in research funding. She has been the Canada Research Chair in Social Gerontology since 2001 and  is currently President of the Canadian Association on Gerontology and president of Academy II (social sciences) of the Royal Society of Canada.

Franco Musio

  • Title Of Presentation : Kidney Disease and Anemia in Elderly Patients

I have been a member of the Medical Staff at Inova Fairfax Hospital (Falls Church, Virgina) for the last twenty two years as a private practice Nephrologist.  I received both undergraduate and medical degrees from Georgetown University (1981/1985, cum laude); Residencies in General Surgery and Internal Medicine from Brooke Army Medical Center (San Antonio, Tx, 1990/1993);  Nephrology Fellowship from Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1995) and subsequent multiple responsibilities as Staff/Attending at Walter Reed. In that capacity I was Instructor and Assistant Professor of Medicine at The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.     

My  responsibilities have included Medical Directorship of the inpatient Hemodialysis Unit (Inova Fairfax Hospital) (2006-2014); Nephrology Section Chief (Inova Fairfax Hospital) (20018 - present); Member-at-Large (Medical Executive Committee; Inova Fairfax Hospital; 2016-2018); ongoing Medical Directorship of the outpatient DaVita Hemodialysis Units of Springfield and Fairfax, initiation of the Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) program at Fairfax Hospital (1999) in collaboration with  the University of California, San Diego, and active participation in teaching Internal Medicine and Nephrology to all levels of trainees.     

Current academic position includes Associate Professor (Virginia Commonwealth University; Inova Fairfax Campus  I have been in private practice with Nephrology Associates of Northern Virginia for the last twenty years and am privileged to sit on Distinguished Advisory Board of Directors of the National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Region. Additionally, I have enjoyed volunteering on a number of medical missions in Haiti and Africa.       I have been primary or co-author of 10 Nephrology-based articles and primary or co-author of 7 abstracts presented at National Nephrology meetings      Hobbies include current training for third degree Black Belt in Hap- Kido (Martial Arts).

Ju Hyun Kim

Chungnam National University, Korea

  • Title Of Presentation : Factors determining the social participation of Korean older adults

JU Hyun Kim is a professor in Chungnam National University. She received Ph.D. in Sociology from the Seoul National University. Her research interests include family and social policy, Gerontology, Social welfare. She leads a team (P.I.) for the research on ageism in Korea and its implications for integrating Korean society. She is currently interested in the social rights and discrimination of elderly in Korea and Japan.  There are some of recent publications: “Family Caregiving by Elderly Korean Women and Their Quality of Life”, Gender, Care and Migration in East Asia (eds.) (2017, Palgrave Macmillan Press), “Productive aging of Korean older people based on time use”, (2019, Social Science & Medicine).
